Podcast Album Cover Art

A client reached out to me for help creating the album art for an upcoming podcast series. The podcast explores “often overlooked” historical events and phenomena that have shaped the world around us. The host asked that her and her two cats be featured prominently in the design. The goal was to make something playful, clean and appealing.

Check out the process below to see how we came to this final piece.

The Concept Phase

After receiving the brief from the client I spent some time coming up with ideas that fit different compositions. In the end, the client liked Option D the best.

The Illustration Phase

I received some references of the host’s hairless Egyptian Sphynx cats and spent some time making cartoon illustrations of them to get a better feel of how they would look in the final illustration.

For this project, I gave the client a few different color options for the album artwork and we worked together to find one that fit the overall brand. We ended up going with Option F and made a few tweaks along the way.

After only a few rounds of minor adjustments, the client approved the final design at the top of this page. All of the text was hand-drawn. These two earlier versions displayed here has text that was a little more whimsical. the cats also felt like they didn’t read as clearly at a small thumbnail scale, so in the final version they were moved to the bottom of the composition.
